There is no church in Notun Tongjhiri Tripura Para where the Christian community rebuilt their houses afresh after being forced to leave a few years back. So the villagers went to the nearby village to attend Christmas eve prayers and celebration. This absence of the villagers offered a great opportunity for the perpetrators to burn down the Tripura Para Christian village. The villagers reported that the unidentified miscreants fled after setting fire. Seventeen of the 19 houses are burned down to ashes. The perpetrators are yet to be arrested.
As for the area where the incident happened, the Daily Star report added that the victim Christian community claims they were forcibly removed several years ago. They said the Tripura community had been there for a long time, but were forced to leave a few years back when some claimed that the land belonged to the wife of a high-ranking police officer during the Awami League regime.
