On Friday night, January 16, 2026, a gas station worker named Ripon Saha was intentionally crushed to death by running a vehicle over him. Thirty year old Ripon was a Hindu by religion who was working as an employee at Rajbari Goalanda More petrol filling station (known as gas station in the US). His job was to fill customers’ vehicles with petrol and collect the payments. According to his employment conditions, he must collect the payment from customers in order to avoid financial penalty. The gas station owner typically deducts the money from his salary if he fails to collect payment from customers.
According to police, CCTV footage, and eye witnesses, the accused, Abul Hashem, a former leader of prominent political party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its youth wing Jubo Dal, arrived at the petrol station in a black Land Cruiser and had the vehicle’s tank filled. After refueling, Hashem allegedly attempted to leave the station without making payment.
When Ripon Saha ran after the vehicle in an attempt to stop it and collect the payment, Hashem and the driver, identified as Kamal Hossain, rammed the car into him. The vehicle reportedly ran over Saha, leaving him critically injured at the spot. He succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive.
Hindu religious minorities are being rampantly attacked and killed in Bangladesh since August 2024 with direct and indirect support from the government. As a result, Muslims are increasingly encouraged and emboldened to attack and kill Hindus. And murdering Ripon Saha is a continuation of Genocide of Hindus in Muslim majority Bangladesh where 91% population is Muslim by religion.
