Hindu Youth Joy Mahapatra allegedly Assaulted & Poisoned to Death by Muslim man

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, a Hindu young man named Joy Mahapatra has allegedly been assaulted and then poisoned to death in Dirai Upazila of Sunamganj district. Joy was a resident of Bhangadahar village of Dirai Upazila, Sunamganj District, in Bangladesh. According to the complaint, a Muslim man named Amirul Islam of the neighboring village of Burhanpur deliberately lured Jay to his shop and committed this brutal act.

It is learned that in the afternoon on January 8, Amirul Islam called Joy Mahapatra asking him to go to his village shop and so Joy showed up at Amirul’s shop. There, Joy was first physically assaulted and his mobile phone was forcibly taken away. It has been alleged that he was then poisoned. Joy fell critically ill due to the poisoning writhing in agony. He was immediately taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). On January 9, 2026, the attending doctors at the hospital declared him dead. 

A pall of grief descended upon Bhangadahar village and the surrounding areas as the news of Joy Mahapatra’s death reached the area. The victim’s family and classmates have claimed it was a planned murder. According to Joy’s friends, Amirul Islam deliberately lured Joy, tortured him, and then killed him by poisoning him. 

Joy’s family and friends expressed their outrage condemning the murder on social media, saying, “Joy was called away, beaten, his mobile phone was taken away, and then he was poisoned and killed. We demand a proper investigation and the maximum possible punishment of the murderer.” 

The incident has sparked intense outrage in the area. Local Hindu community members, as well as ordinary citizens, have demanded the swift arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment.

জয় মহাপাত্রকে তার দোকানে ডেকে নিয়ে এই নৃশংস ঘটনা ঘটান
জয় মহাপাত্রের মৃত্যুর খবর এলাকায় পৌঁছালে ভাঙ্গাডহর ও আশপাশের এলাকায় শোকের ছায়া নেমে আসে। নিহতের পরিবার ও সহপাঠীরা একে পরিকল্পিত হত্যাকাণ্ড বলে দাবি করেছেন। নিহতের বন্ধুদের ভাষ্য, আমিরুল ইসলাম ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে জয়কে ডেকে এনে নির্যাতনের পর বিষ প্রয়োগ করে হত্যা করেছে।
তারা সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে এ ঘটনার তীব্র নিন্দা ও ক্ষোভ জানিয়ে বলেন,
“জয়কে ডেকে নিয়ে মারধর করে, মোবাইল রেখে দিয়ে বিষ খাইয়ে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। আমরা এর সঠিক তদন্ত ও সর্বোচ্চ শাস্তি চাই।”
এ ঘটনায় এলাকায় তীব্র ক্ষোভ বিরাজ করছে। স্থানীয় হিন্দু সম্প্রদায়ের পাশাপাশি সাধারণ মানুষও দ্রুত অভিযুক্তকে গ্রেপ্তার করে দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তির দাবি জানিয়েছেন।
সুনামগঞ্জের দিরাই উপজেলায় এক হিন্দু যুবককে বিষ প্রয়োগে হত্যার অভিযোগ উঠেছে। নিহতের নাম জয় মহাপাত্র। তার বাড়ি দিরাই উপজেলার ভাঙ্গাডহর গ্রাম। অভিযোগ অনুযায়ী, পার্শ্ববর্তী বুরহানপুর গ্রামের আমিরুল ইসলাম পরিকল্পিতভাবে জয় মহাপাত্রকে তার দোকানে ডেকে নিয়ে এই নৃশংস ঘটনা ঘটায়।
জানা যায়, গত ৮ জানুয়ারি বিকেলে আমিরুল ইসলাম তার গ্রামের দোকানে ডেকে নেয় জয় মহাপাত্রকে। সেখানে তাকে প্রথমে মারধর করা হয় এবং জোরপূর্বক তার মোবাইল ফোন রেখে দেওয়া হয়। এরপর তাকে বিষ খাইয়ে দেওয়া হয় বলে অভিযোগ উঠেছে। বিষক্রিয়ায় অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়লে জয় মহাপাত্র গুরুতর অবস্থায় ছটফট করতে থাকেন।
অতি দ্রুত জয় মহাপাত্রকে সিলেট এম.এ.জি. ওসমানী মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয় এবং তাকে আইসিইউতে ভর্তি করা হয়। দীর্ঘ চিকিৎসা সত্ত্বেও, ৯ জানুয়ারি ২০২৬ কর্তব্যরত চিকিৎসকরা তাকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন
