{"id":112,"date":"2016-10-31T04:38:10","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T04:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hrcb.org\/?p=112"},"modified":"2016-10-31T04:38:10","modified_gmt":"2016-10-31T04:38:10","slug":"at-least-15-temples-100-hindu-houses-vandalised-looted-for-hours-in-brahmanbarhia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrcb.org\/index.php\/at-least-15-temples-100-hindu-houses-vandalised-looted-for-hours-in-brahmanbarhia\/","title":{"rendered":"At least 15 temples, 100 Hindu houses vandalised, looted for hours in Brahmanbarhia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 100 houses belonging to Hindus in the area have also been vandalised and looted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hindu-Temple-Attacked-in-Brahmanbarhia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-113\" alt=\"hindu-temple-attacked-in-brahmanbarhia\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hindu-Temple-Attacked-in-Brahmanbarhia-300x231.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hrcb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hindu-Temple-Attacked-in-Brahmanbarhia-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hrcb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hindu-Temple-Attacked-in-Brahmanbarhia.jpg 531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the mayhem for hours on Sunday afternoon, two temples in adjacent Habiganj&#8217;s Madhabpur came under attack, police and witnesses said.<\/p>\n<p>Six persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Border Guard Bangladesh has been deployed in Nasirnagar and Madhabpur Upazila headquarters along with the Rapid Action Battalion, police and Armed Police Battalion.<\/p>\n<p>The district&#8217;s Deputy Commissioner Rezwanur Rahman and Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman inspected the area later in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>But the leaders of the local Hindu community say the panic that has gripped them is not going away.<\/p>\n<p>Islami Oikya Jote leader late Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini&#8217;s district Brahmanbarhia is a stronghold of the Islamist parties.<\/p>\n<p>In January, a music college named after the renowned composer and music teacher Ustad Alauddin Khan was vandalised in the district following the death of a madrasa student.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s attack was carried out in a style followed by the attackers of Buddhist community at Ramu in Cox&#8217;s Bazar in 2012 on a similar allegation of disrespect towards Islam through a Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>Locals said Nasirnagar&#8217;s incident started with a Facebook post by one Rasraj Das, son of Jagannath Das from Harinberh village under Haripur Union Parishad.<\/p>\n<p>Police detained Rasraj on Friday immediately after the allegation of blasphemy had surfaced against him.<\/p>\n<p>He was sent to jail following a court order, SP Mizanur said.<\/p>\n<p>Protests against Rasraj&#8217;s post were called under the banner of &#8216;Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat&#8217; in Habiganj district headquarters and Nasirnagar. Demonstrations were also announced in Habiganj&#8217;s Madhabpur.<\/p>\n<p>A group of madrasa students demonstrated on the premises of Brahmanbarhia Press Club while hundreds of people blocked Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai road by torching tyres on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>SP Mizanur, quoting witnesses, said a group of the demonstrators, armed with local weapons, vandalised the temples at Duttubarhi, Namashudraparha and Ghoshparha, and Jagannath Temple and Goura Temple.<\/p>\n<p>They also vandalised and looted the houses of the Hindu families. Several priests were injured in the attack, the SP said.<\/p>\n<p>One platoon of BGB was deployed first to bring the situation under control. The other forces joined them later.<\/p>\n<p>SP Mizanur said preparations to file separate cases over the attacks were under way. Six suspected attackers have been arrested, he added.<\/p>\n<p>BGB Battalion-12 Commander Lt Col Shah Ali said the border guards were deployed at the district magistrate&#8217;s request.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Commissioner Rezwanur told the media that those responsible for the attack would get &#8216;exemplary&#8217; punishment after investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Nasirnagar Upazila Parishad Vice-Chairman Anjan Deb said, &#8220;The situation is apparently calm now but the Hindu community is still panicked.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Madhabpur Upazila Puja Udjapon Committee chief Sunil Das said the members of the religious minority community were pained by the attack, which was carried out a day after Kali Puja.<\/p>\n<p>SP Mizanur blamed Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir for the attack.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The opportunist quarter carried out this attack to embarrass the government.
